Harry Potter Smileys (follow-up)
In response to Joshua's post, I decided to make a few smileys for the message boards! Here's Harry, Ron, Hermione, Hagrid, McGonagall, Dumbledore, Snape, and Quirrel. They're not very good now, but they'll get better.

Kid wiz tops dinosaurs at foreign box office
It's official: Harry Potter has edged past Jurassic Park to rank as the second-best earner of all time at the foreign box office. More from Variety via Yahoo!:

Ten weeks after it kicked off its international rollout in the U.K. and Taiwan, ``Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone'' hit $563.2 million, buoyed by a $12.7 million weekend in 52 markets.

Kept aloft by hefty repeat business, the Chris Columbus-helmed fantasy looks as if it will have enough momentum to reach $600 million. Its stellar hauls are led by Japan's $134.5 million (where it banked $3.4 million in its eighth outing, still No. 1), the U.K.'s $87.6 million, Germany's $64.2 million and France's $42.5 million. With $21 million in the till in Australia, it's now that territory's third-highest grosser, behind ``Titanic'' and ``Crocodile Dundee.''

Harry Potter Smilies
I am looking for some good Harry Potter smilies for use on the MuggleNet Forums, and I just can't seem to find any. If you have seen any, please e-mail them to me. If you know how to make good smilies, here are some examples of what I am looking for. Most smileys are 15x15 pixels.

Harry with scar, Snape, Dumbeldore, Ron, Hermione, Draco, smiley with broom, smiley with wand, owl, crookshanks, scabbers, sorting hat, or any other Harry Potter specific object or creature.

Bloomsbury web site - book 5 blurb
Bloomsbury made a short comment on the possibility of a July release date on their website:

"We are not going to set a publication date for the fifth book until the book has been finished. In a perfect world the date would be July 2002, but we will wait until the book is written before making a decision. We will let you know more information as soon as we can."

Well, is this not a perfect world we are living in? Just kidding...Thanks to The Leaky Couldron for the link.

Another CoS Picture
DarkMark.com has got another picture from the second movie, scanned from the Sunday's LA Times Calendar section. Check out this pic:

It appears to be a picture of Harry holding a book, I'm guessing it's Tom Riddle's diary...

$1,000,000,000 in book sales!
...And Harry Potter was a major helper. Ananova:
Harry Potter has helped book sales break the $1 billion barrier for the first time.

Cookery books by Jamie Oliver and Delia Smith have also played a part in
boosting book sales.

Almost £980 million of books were sold in stores in 2001, with internet sales
taking the total past £1 billion.

I don't know what the pound-to-dollar ratio is, but I know that the pound has more value then the US dollar.

Note from Jon: The pound is about 1.446 times the value of a US dollar (I think). So £1 billion is about $650,000,000.

Picture of Branagh as Professor Lockhart???
The Leaky Cauldron pointed our sights to an interesting picture featured on The Sun, which claims that it's a picture of Branagh as Professor Lockhart. Can it be true?? We'll have to wait for Warner Bros to confirm that. However, he doesn't seem to be dressed like a wizard, as he is donning muggle clothes...

Bulgaria Tries to Sharpen Up Its Image
Reuters (via Yahoo) has a small article about Bulgaria's need for Harry Potter:

Bulgaria surprised the EU last month by saying it planned to wrap up accession talks by 2003 and join the bloc in the first wave of enlargement, which Brussels plans for 2004.

The Balkan state had earlier cited 2006 as its EU target entry date and some experts feel even that may be too ambitious, given Bulgaria's poverty.

The sudden change of target date triggered a dismissive response from EU enlargement commissioner Guenter Verheugen.

"You would need magical powers for that. It is a Harry Potter (news - web sites) approach," Verheugen said, referring to the character in the best-selling books of J.K. Rowling."

Harry Potter and the truth about the North
The Irish Independent reports:

...This Friday, asked by my stern gaffer on this paper to explain what's going on in Northern Ireland, I went to see Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone in the hope that it would give my thoughts coherence. And so it did, because it was about good and evil and everyone knew which side they were on. And there was never any danger that Professor Dumbledore, the head of Hogwarts' wizard academy, would expel Harry because in defeating the bad guys he had contravened some of the school regulations.

New Harry Potter Ads in UK
I just recieved an email from Michael about some new Harry Potter adverts:

In the U.K there are new avertisements popping up in the newspapers. One features a night sky with Harry's head turning and a nimbus 2000 behind the HARRY POTTER logo. Also at Bus stops there have been advertisements such as Harry and Ron in their Jumpers and The Dursleys.

Stand in for Daniel
Ananova (they are quite helpful, aren't they?) reports:
A 48-year-old former jockey is to act as a stand-in for Harry Potter.

Richard Fox has landed the role in the second film to be based on JK Rowling's books.

The retired flat jockey will stand in for 12-year-old Daniel Radcliffe
off-camera.

Harry Potter beats Austen in sale rooms
"First editions and drawings fetching magical sums..." Believe it or not, Thomas Taylor, the young graduate artist who decided what Harry Potter ought to look like, made only two or three hundred pounds for his first drawing of the boy hero in 1997. Now, five years after its publication, initial designs for the covers of J. K. Rowling's novels are worth tens of thousands.
